Senior Finds Her Voice as Leader and Performer

Suraya Buffong '18 is an aspiring scientist, award-winning thespian, and Facing History and Ourselves leader.
At Hutchison, teachers instill confidence in the girls to ensure they know their thoughts and opinions are important and valued. Girls are encouraged to find their voices and make them heard. Suraya Buffong '18 does just that. As a Facing History and Ourselves student ambassador, she facilitates meaningful dialogue around challenging societal issues among Mid-South youth. Her thoughts about equality and innovation in education were recently featured on Columbia University's The Hechinger Report. Click here to read her essay.

In addition to spearheading positive social change, Suraya has taken her voice to the theater stage as an actress and performer. She recently earned an Orpheum Theatre Oustanding Featured Actress nomination for her role as Ton Ton Julian in our fall musical Once on This Island.

In the classroom, Suraya distinguishes herself as a diligent scholar, eager to take on our most challenging science courses. She has even had the opportunity to extend her love of science beyond the classroom through a Hutchison Leads internship with Dr. Lisa Stanford, a neuropsychologist at Akron Children's Hospital and our 2018 Distinguished Alumna.

We look forward to seeing what Suraya will accomplish when she heads to The University of Miami this fall.
