  • A Nurturing Community

Hutchison’s culture is defined by a strong sense of community nurtured through girls’ experiences in the classroom, at chapel, or during timeless traditions like Black and Gold Day. Teachers and administrators foster a nurturing environment where girls become more confident and resilient.

Character development is woven into every aspect of the Hutchison experience. Students actively engage with values such as honesty, understanding, trustworthiness, and courtesy. In this video girls live out the Hutchison acrostic in a new tradition. These ideals are not just taught; they are practiced daily, shaping how girls lead, learn, and relate to others.

Hutchison was one of the first schools in Memphis to ban cell phones in school as part of the national trend to steer young people toward healthier social interactions.
The Hutchison experience cultivates a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

Chapel

Regular Chapel assemblies allow girls to reflect, connect, and grow alongside one another. Chapel brings the community together around shared values and diverse perspectives. Hutchison welcomes students of all faiths and teaches appreciation for the differences among us. Girls explore their own beliefs, learn from others, and engage in meaningful, respectful dialogue.

Trusted Adults and Advisory

Without a strong sense of self, students will struggle. We believe every child should have a trusted adult that they feel knows them beyond the classroom. In Upper School, this is formalized through daily advisory meetings which create a smaller circle of trust where each student is guided by caring adults and peers.

Her Voice Matters

Hutchison places a strong emphasis on civil discourse, teaching girls early on productive ways to express opinions. Whether in structured classroom discussions or broader community conversations, girls develop the confidence and skills to communicate with integrity and empathy, preparing them to lead with both conviction and compassion.

Traditions

Of all the beloved traditions, Black and Gold Day is most likely to transcend generations. Decades after graduation, some alumnae still remember whether they were on the black team or the gold team.
