Hutchison is a unique school, more than just the brick and mortar buildings that hold our classrooms. The campus is a living entity. Our lake is not only scenic but also a learning laboratory for our girls.
Over the past two years, teachers in our Middle School have worked collaboratively to design a study of the lake that comprises several subject areas, including math, science, humanities, and the arts. The middle school lake project has given our girls the opportunity to go out into the field and get their hands dirty. We believe hands-on activities are instrumental for a girl to enjoy school and develop a love of learning.
The lake project was recently featured in Science Scope, the definitive journal for middle and high school science teachers. In an article in its September issue, teachers Ms. Donna Budynas and Dr. Rebecca Deehr, along with Dr. Barry Gilmore (former head of Middle School, now head of Upper School) describe the goals and tools, what was studied, and what was learned. This is incredible recognition of our curriculum and also speaks to the creativity and collaboration of our teachers.
Little Hive teachers Ms. Hollingsworth and Ms. Aguilar followed our youngest girls’ interest in the weather to expand their scientific knowledge and various skills, from creativity to storytelling to fine motor skills.
In these student-led R.E.A.L. discussions, our fourth graders sharpen their conversation skills while learning to support their ideas with evidence and think critically.
