Dr. Kristen Ring Joins National Conversation on School Leadership

How does Hutchison support student well-being? During an Independent Schools Management webinar on school leadership, Head of School Dr. Kristen Ring shared with educators how Hutchison is responding to evolving student needs with clarity, consistency, and care.
From navigating AI to supporting teacher retention and student well-being, Dr. Ring offered a look at how Hutchison is rising to different challenges with both innovation and humanity. A major focus of the conversation was the rising need for structure and support in students’ lives. Dr. Ring described Hutchison’s commitment to creating consistency for girls at a time when their outside world can feel unpredictable.

“More than ever before, kids need structure. They need to know where lines are, what expectations are,” she said. “We need to be engaging directly with them and asking them all the time, ‘How are you doing?’ ”

She highlighted Hutchison’s advisory program, annual surveys to ensure every girl has a trusted adult, and the school’s decision to remove phones from campus to create a more focused, supportive learning environment. She emphasized the importance of normalizing counseling and increasing access to learning specialists and licensed clinicians.

“Kids are more open about how they’re feeling than ever before. We’re tuning into that and having those conversations constantly,” she said.

The discussion also explored operational challenges facing schools nationwide. Dr. Ring spoke about the importance of transparency in building trust with families: “In a relationship economy, trust is the currency, and parents will trust you if you’re talking about where the money goes and how the budget breaks down.”

She emphasized the need for schools to understand their markets and plan strategically for long-term sustainability.

On the topic of teacher retention, Dr. Ring noted Hutchison’s strong culture and community. “Retention is absolutely critical… Teachers stay because they feel valued and part of something really important here,” she said. She added how Hutchison’s interview process has become more robust to ensure alignment with the school’s mission and expectations.

While the panel covered several complex issues, Dr. Ring’s contributions centered on a consistent theme: leading with intention, compassion, and a commitment to doing what is best for our girls. We’re proud to see Dr. Ring recognized as a thoughtful advocate for placing students at the center of national conversations about the future of education.
