Non scholae sed vitae discimus (“We learn not for school but for life”). This was the theme of the 2025 National Latin convention, held in late July at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Sofia Gagliano '28 attended the convention and, as second vice president of the Tennessee Junior Classical League, led the state delegation in daily themed spirit contests against other state delegations.
Sofia competed in a variety of athletic and artistic contests and earned first places in junior girls discus and shot put, in addition to first places in swimming events of junior girls 100FR and 200FR. For the second year in a row, she was the highest scorer at the national convention for overall Olympika athletic events, which included swimming, track and field, and an abbreviated marathon event. Nearly 900 students and 280 chaperones from across the United States attended the national convention both in person and online.
