Lower School Science Lab Inspires Curiosity and Resilience

Through hands-on experiments and collaborations with the Design Lab and Dobbs Farm, teacher Christine Groves is helping our girls in junior kindergarten through fourth grade grow their curiosity, critical thinking, and resiliency.
To Mrs. Groves, science is magic, but it’s real. The experiments conducted in the science lab will help Hutchison girls in junior kindergarten through fourth grade actively engage with scientific concepts and bring the various topics that they study to life, from earth science to biology to physics.

“The fun happens when you are in the moment, watching students with their hands experimenting, solving problems, and figuring out why something did or did not do what it was supposed to. Having those lightbulb moments go off is the best part of science to me,” she said.

Mrs. Groves hopes to instill curiosity and a lifelong love of learning in her girls. She encourages students to embrace learning and thinking processes such as the scientific method and engineering design.

“These processes teach them that mistakes are ok. That is part of learning, and you just try again. It helps them develop resiliency,” she said. “The more they enjoy learning, the more they’ll push through the hard times and difficult material, because they know that the outcome is going to be worth it.”

I hope to empower the girls through STEM by giving them confidence in those fields… to give them experience or a connection to something that will help them later on in their career, laying the foundation for their future.
