Nineteen Girls Participate in Mock State Government Conference

Nineteen upper school girls traveled to Nashville last weekend to participate in the Tennessee YMCA Youth in Government Program, an annual conference designed to offer high school and middle school students a hands-on experience with state government.
Hutchison had five girls participate in the Justice component of the conference while our two lawyer teams won a total of four cases and Emily Cohen presided over the court as Supreme Court Justice. Fourteen girls participated as Senators and Congresswomen accounting for a total of five Hutchison represented bills. All five of the bills made it to the general docket where they were debated in the House and the Senate. Two of these were passed into the "law" by the Governor. Courtney Davis was awarded outstanding Statesperson and Madison Grinder, Mary Van Montague, and Josephine Redd received an award for outstanding bill. Also, Nora Tillmanns and Katie McBride have been elected as officers for the 2018 conference. This was a great learning experience for the girls as they got to be in the Capitol building and gain a better understanding of our state government.
