Junior Kindergarteners Explore the Heart

"Your heart in your body is different than a pretty Valentine's heart!"
"Your heart in your body is different than a pretty Valentine's heart!"

Recently our junior kindergarten girls had a hands-on learning experience dissecting sheep hearts. Why? Around Valentine’s Day, our JK teachers encourage the girls to focus on being able to express their feelings and appreciation of one another. Classroom discussion centers on speaking from the heart. Since emotions and the heart are often tied together, teachers intertwine this with awareness of the girls' bodies. As the girls notice Valentine's heart shapes in various places around this time, questions arise such as, “Do our real hearts look like Valentine's hearts?”

This is the beginning of comparing and contrasting the two hearts as the girls observe, sketch, mold, and even dissect hearts! Throughout this study, there is a focus on health and well-being. We ask, “How can we be heart healthy?” and “How can we take care of our bodies?”
