Alumnae Share Wisdom at College Counseling Panel

Upper school girls kicked off the start of the 2017 spring semester with a visit from five young alumnae during a college counseling panel.
The panelists shared with the girls tips on when to take college visits, the importance of time management, and how Hutchison prepared them to be successful in college. They also imparted words of wisdom they wish they had known themselves in high school.

Amber Kiner, a junior at Berklee College of Music, talked about the value of the college experience. "You don't have to have it all together when you get to college. College is there for you to figure it out." She also imparted wise words of advice on homework. "When you get your homework, just do it right then. You'll find that you have much more time for other things that way."

Ana Romero, a freshman at Hendrix College, reminded girls to take care of themselves. "Take care of yourself. You are important. Take advantage of your teachers at Hutchison. Don't be afraid of failure." She also reminded girls of the importance of balancing academic and social activities. "You can have fun and do well in school. Balance is important."

Cillie Harrison, a senior at Tulane University, discussed the importance of managing your time and newfound freedom well. "Do not procrastinate. The writing and reading assignments will overwhelm you if you do that."

Charlotte Nichols, a Trent Lott Leadership fellow at the University of Mississippi, shared how valuable it can be to build mentoring relationships with your professors. "Make sure your professors know how hard you are trying, and don't be afraid to ask them questions. It can be the difference between an A and a B."

Emily Faber, a sophomore at Rhodes College, encouraged girls to stay humble. "There will always be people who are smarter than you. Make friends with them. You are valuable and worthy. Your opinions matter. Don't be afraid to speak up!"
