Sophie Merchant '17 placed ninth in the world in the 2016 American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) PhysicsBowl exam, an international competition. The PhysicsBowl is comprised of two divisions, and Merchant competed in Division 1, which is reserved for first-year physics students. In her division, she placed first in the region (which is comprised of nine states), sixth in the U.S., and ninth in the world. According to AAPT, approximately 10,000 students in the world take the exam. The PhysicsBowl, first introduced in 1985, is open to high school students. The test has 40 multiple choice questions and must be completed in 45 minutes. Exam questions are based on topics and concepts covered in a typical high school physics course.
