Shubhi Singh ’22 Discovered a Love of Learning and STEM at Hutchison

From math to science to writing, Shubhi Singh is a diligent student and National Merit Finalist who has always wanted to learn more.
Going to the “big girl” library for the first time made Shubhi Singh ’22 feel like she was on top of the world. She was awed that she was finally old enough to check out chapter books. Out of her 15 years at Hutchison, this day stands out as her favorite memory at school and reflects how faculty have instilled a love of learning in Shubhi since she began attending Hutchison in pre-K.

Shubhi is a National Merit Finalist who excels in the classroom. She thanks Hutchison for encouraging her to always learn more and for engaging her natural curiosity. One of the things she appreciated was Hutchison’s interdisciplinary approach to learning. For example, she remembers how intertwined her sixth-grade history and English classes were: in history, her class studied ancient civilizations, and in English, they read a book about a girl living in ancient Rome.

The best thing Hutchison taught her is to trust herself and be confident in her opinions, Shubhi said. Through government classes and civics seminars, she learned how to think critically through exposure to a variety of viewpoints.

“Hutchison prepared me to understand the world and find my place in it through deliberate critical thinking and the ability to stand up for myself,” Shubhi said. “I know that I have a good head on my shoulders.”

Hutchison has also given Shubhi the opportunity to try new things while narrowing her interests. Among her many talents and activities, she is a math tutor, an aspiring doctor, a two-time captain of the varsity golf team, and a classical pianist. She credits Hutchison’s classes and activities such as Destination Imagination in building her passion for STEM. Hutchison’s math teachers helped Shubhi build a strong foundation in the subject. Since her sophomore year, she has been using these skills as a tutor for Mathnasium. She said it has been fulfilling to teach concepts to other students using tips and tricks that she learned at Hutchison.

Interested in becoming an anesthesiologist, Shubhi interned with Lifelink Anesthesia during the summer of 2021. Although she was unable to gain clinical experience because of the COVID-19 pandemic and age restrictions, she said she gained valuable knowledge and insight about healthcare. Shubhi said she enjoys working with and helping others, and she wants to use her love of science to take care of patients effectively and compassionately.

Golf was not something Shubhi wanted to do at first, but she kept coming back to the sport because of the sense of community. She started learning to play when she was 8 years old and began playing with Hutchison in sixth grade. She said golf is a mental game that has taught her how to remain calm during difficult situations.

“Working with teammates and putting myself in situations with various responses has been invaluable in helping me grow my critical thinking skills,” Shubhi said. “It has been an amazing experience to grow as an individual and learn who I am as a leader and team member.”

Learning to play piano has been crucial in helping her develop the discipline to work toward her goals. She started taking lessons through the Center for Excellence when she was in fifth grade. Her hard work and dedication have paid off: Shubhi was one of eight students selected from across the Mid-South to have renowned pianist Thomas Pandolfi provide feedback on her performance.

Shubhi is a recipient of the Harvard University Book Award, a highly selective honor for outstanding students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship and achievement in service and leadership. She is also a member of the Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, Sara Frey History Society, and Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Reaching the end of senior year is bittersweet for Shubhi, who calls Hutchison a positive and supportive environment where the sense of community is “unmatched.” She is excited for the future though. She will attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall, where she plans to major in biology on the pre-medical track.
