  • Mar. 31 - Senior Events Update

Dear Upper School Students and Parents,
While we do not know what the future holds for us in terms of being back in school before the end of the year, our hope is to honor our seniors and continue Hutchison’s traditions. Our May Day and graduation ceremonies are incredibly beautiful and important milestones for our seniors. We are going to do whatever we can to ensure that the class of 2020 is able to experience those special moments.
Please find our contingency plans below. Each would include events being held at their original locations, including the Cadre building for Sting Fling and Idlewild Presbyterian Church for Graduation. These plans assume social gathering guidelines have been lifted.

We will be sure to communicate any changes to the above plans as soon as we have them.

  • Mar. 23 - Distance Learning Update

    Dear Parents,
I hope this finds you healthy and well.
Given the latest directive from Mayor Strickland's office, we will not be returning to school on March 30. We are prepared to deliver instruction remotely for the remainder of the year, but we maintain hope that we will be able to return at some point. Because of the uncertainty of the situation, we will refrain from announcing a specific return date at this time.
Thank you for your patience as we all navigate this unusual time in history.

    Dear Parents:
I hope that you were able to enjoy much of spring break, despite the rising concern over the coronavirus. We continue to monitor CDC guidelines and local and state health department recommendations regarding COVID-19 (coronavirus). In an effort to reduce risk of exposure to our families, students will not return to campus until Monday, March 30.
Your division head will contact you with more information and procedures for online learning set to begin Wednesday, March 18.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this complex and evolving situation.

  • Feb. 27 - COVID-19 Preparations

    Dear Parents,
We are closely monitoring the reports about novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Click here to learn more about the virus, its symptoms, and how to protect yourself.
Our emergency preparedness team will work under the direction of the Shelby County Health Department and other local officials to guide our actions should an outbreak of this respiratory illness impact our school community.
With spring break approaching, we encourage you to follow travel recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If you travel to a place where you fear your family has been exposed to the virus, please consult with your primary care physician to come up with a plan before returning to school (Our policy is that students must be fever-free without the help of medication for at least 24 hours). Our teachers and division heads are prepared to work individually with families to provide lessons that can be completed at home. Should we need to close school for a period of time due to an outbreak of the coronavirus, we have the technology in place that will allow students to stay home and work online.
To reiterate, the CDC recommends the following precautions:
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • Stay home when you are sick. Remember a student must be fever-free without the help of medication for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
We appreciate your vigilance in helping us keep our students and faculty/staff healthy.

  • Travel & Self-Quarantine

We know that all of you are trying to make the best travel choices for your family. When traveling to another country, we encourage you to keep abreast of changes in restrictions for COVID-19 by using the following website, U.S. State Department, to review your destination(s) before your departure, during your trip, and upon your return. We understand this information changes daily and as such, we encourage you to check this website regularly. Please be mindful that with no advanced notice, airlines may cancel flights as COVID-19 spreads.

Please note that the Center for Disease Control and Prention (CDC) is asking all travelers arriving in the U.S. from countries with a level 2 or 3 warning, even if asymptomatic, to self-quarantine for 14 days.

In an abundance of caution, we are following their guidelines and asking our students, parents, faculty, staff and volunteers who are traveling to and/or returning from CDC Level 2 or 3 areas, or whose household members are returning from CDC Level 2 or 3 areas, not to return to school (including any school activities on or off campus) until a 14-day period has elapsed following their return to the United States. Students will need to obtain medical clearance before returning to campus. If you travel to these areas, we ask you to self-report to our school nurse Millie Duke and your division head.

Please contact your personal physician for specific instructions regarding self-quarantine.
