 | Hutchison empowers girls to realize their dreams. Each student is encouraged to seek her own unique abilities and talents as she cultivates a positive self image. Hutchison supports each girl's journey through a variety of programs and services available during and after school hours.
|
Our goal is to help each girl realize her own academic potential at every grade level. We are committed to meeting the individual needs of each student by working with her both inside and outside the classroom. If a student needs individual assistance, her teacher is the primary person responsible for providing such assistance. When an individual need cannot be met during the regular school day, a classroom tutorial is available after school.
Learning Specialists and teachers in each division support general education and reading support and provide gifted and talented education. Students who meet our Admissions requirements and who have documented learning disabilities are provided the appropriate accommodations that are consistent with the dedication of Hutchison to academic excellence and future college success.
We offer the support of a Learning Specialist and Reading Specialist for Early Childhood and Lower School students, a Learning Specialist for Middle School students 5-8, and an Upper School Learning specialist for students in 9-12. |
Counseling services are provided to all students at Hutchison in order to foster a sense of emotional, social, and developmental well-being. Three full-time counselors are available for student support, brief counseling, parent consultation, crisis intervention, and referral services. Parents, students, faculty, and administrators consult with the counselors regarding a wide range of psychosocial concerns that may affect a student's experience at Hutchison.
The Early Childhood and Lower School Counselor works with all students SK-4 in the classroom with a "Special Time" program. Topics include learning about feelings, frienship, manners, kindness, empathy, social skills, conflict resolution. The girls love their "Special Time" with the counselor and enjoy using role-plays, skits, books, artwork, songs as ways to learn this valuable information. The lessons are devopmentally appropriate and the messages reinforced in the classroom and in Chapel programs.
The Middle and Upper Schools' counselors lead the advisory programs. Advisors are trained in communicating with advisees, leading groups, and discussing topics pertinent to the age group they advise. Advisory groups are small groups of students who meet regularly with a faculty advisor. Advisory time is an opportunity for girls to discuss topics of interest to them, to connect with each other, and to build a supportive relationship with their advisor.
There is a stong connection between the Middle and Upper School students through the mentoring programs. The Upper School Peer Council meets with Middle School students to discuss class unity, friendships, resolving conflicts, self-esteem, and the transition to Upper School. The Peer Council spends a day each spring with the 8th grade on thir "transition day" where they learn about upper school life, academics, responsibilty, and freedom. The Middle School Peer Committee functions in a similar way to the Upper School Peer Council as they work to increase morale and build a sense of community in the Middle School.
The Upper School Mentor group is made up of students who have chosen not to drink alcohol, use drugs, or smoke, and want younger students to know how much they enjoy and benefit from their decisions. They work with students in small groups and share how they each came to their decision and what positve impact it has made. They want to dispel the myth that most high school students drink.
Facilitators with the Freedom From Chemical Dependency (FCD) program visit the Upper School each year. FCD is a well known and highly regarded national prevention program for high school students.

Prime for Life is a prevention-focused educational program developed by Prevention Research Institue (PRI). PRI has been reviewing the most current research and using this information to teach effective prevention of alcohol and substance abuse for over 25 years.
The Prime for Life for Parents program is designed to help parents communciate effectively with teens about alcohol and drugs in a factual, non-threatening way before a problem occurs. It is about equipping teens to make wise decisions and equipping parents to talk about these subjects.
Prime for Life is the parent piece to the comprehensive program Hutchison is developing to help our students reach their highest potential.
